You cut down all the trees
No wood left to make a boat
No way to escape
An island so remote
No way to fish upon the sea
No fruit left to harvest
Flightless birds were all killed
Societal darkness
You waded into the water
Catching what you could by hand
A tragedy of heedlessness
That would only expand
The dolphins and fish moved away
Wise to your desperation
The cliff nesting seabirds
Took permanent vacation
You watched them fly away
Like broken hearted lovers
Nothing left for you to eat
But each other
The giant stone gods
Unable to bear the horror
Stared out at the ocean
Or toppled over
What is our Earth …
But a tiny island paradise
