Stargazing

We cling to life so tenaciously
A ferocity wired genetically
Into all creatures that be
We fear the possibility
Of death's finality
Of no transcendent mystery
No reward for all our miseries

We look at other galaxies
And wonder ... Can it be?
Other life we cannot see?
Yet the light we see
Is ancient soliloquy
Unfathomable relativity
Like an early childhood memory

So many eons of humanity
Accelerating technology
Yet still the moon shines so maternally
Still we project ourselves so freely
And seek eternal meaning
In the stars
